How to Delete Meta AI Chat History (App, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram)

Delete all your Meta AI chats in the Meta AI app, or wipe Meta's copy of your AI chats in WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram with two short commands. Plain steps.

Quick answer: In the Meta AI app, tap Menu (top left) → Settings (bottom left) → Data & privacy → Manage your information → Delete all chats and media → Delete all. In WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram, deleting the chat only removes it from your phone's list. To delete Meta's own copy, type /reset-ai in a chat with Meta AI (that one chat), or /reset-all-ais (every AI chat).

Meta AI is the AI helper made by Meta, the company behind Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. You may have bumped into it without meaning to: it shows up as a "Meta AI" chat or search bar in those apps, and there is also a separate Meta AI app. Here is how to clear what you have said to it, step by step.

In the Meta AI app: delete all chats at once

  1. Open the Meta AI app and tap Menu in the top left.
  2. Tap Settings in the bottom left.
  3. Under App settings, tap Data & privacy.
  4. Tap Manage your information.
  5. Tap Delete all chats and media, then Delete all.

Meta says your chats, prompts and pictures you made will no longer show in the History and Media sections. One catch: anything you posted publicly (Meta calls these posts "vibes") is not deleted by this. On the same Manage your information screen, tap Remove all public vibes → Remove all to take those off your profile and the public feed too.

Pictures and videos you made with Meta AI

Every picture or video you make in the Meta AI app or at meta.ai is kept in Menu → Media → Creations, and the chat you made it in stays under Chats. Delete all chats and media (the steps above) clears both. Pictures you tapped Save on are also copied to your phone, so delete those from your Photos or Gallery app too. If you make pictures in other apps as well, here's how to delete ChatGPT image history and other AI pictures.

In WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram: use the reset commands

This part surprises people. If you delete a Meta AI chat the normal way (swipe, press and hold, Delete), it disappears from your chat list, but Meta still has its copy. Meta's own privacy page explains that on WhatsApp, deleting the chat in the app only deletes it on WhatsApp.

To delete Meta's copy, type a short command as if it were a message:

  • One chat: open the chat with Meta AI and send /reset-ai. Meta AI forgets that conversation.
  • Every AI chat: in a one-to-one chat with Meta AI, send /reset-all-ais. This resets Meta AI in all your chats in that app, including group chats where someone asked it something.

Type the slash and the words exactly, with no spaces. After a reset, you can still delete the chat from your list the normal way so it is gone from your screen too.

WhatsApp says your normal chats with friends and family stay end-to-end encrypted, and Meta can only read messages that mention @Meta AI or that someone chooses to share with it. The reset commands are about what you sent to Meta AI, not your everyday texts.

Meta AI's memory

Meta AI can remember details you tell it in one-to-one chats, like "I'm vegetarian" or "I have a dog", to make later answers more personal. To see or remove these, open your chat with Meta AI, tap the info button (the small "i") at the top right, and choose Memory. Delete the items you don't want kept. If it remembers something wrong, you can also just tell it in the chat, and Meta says it should use the new information going forward.

Voice chats

If you talk to Meta AI out loud, Meta says the voice recording stays in your history only for a short while, but the text transcript stays until you delete it. So use the steps above to clear voice chats too.

Can I stop Meta from learning from my chats?

Meta says it uses your conversations with its AIs to improve AI at Meta, and depending on where you live, they may also shape the content and ads you see. Deleting a chat later can't take back something you already sent. The safest habit is the simplest: treat Meta AI like a stranger at a bus stop and don't tell it anything private.

Meta changes button names often, and some features are not available in every country. If a step doesn't match your screen, check Meta's own page, Remove posts, chats and media from Meta AI.

Deleting is not a time machine

Deleting tidies your history. It doesn't undo something you already shared. If you typed a password, change it. If you shared a bank or card number, call your bank. And if a message claiming to be "Meta support" asks you for a code or a payment, stop: see How to spot fake support. Next time, check our What never to paste list first.

Other AI apps

If you would not post it on a public bulletin board, do not type it into an AI chat.
