What never to paste into ChatGPT / Gemini / Copilot
A plain-English list of what not to paste into AI chats, why it matters, and what to do instead.
AI tools are helpful, but they are not vaults. Here is what to keep out of any chat box — and what to do instead.
Passwords
Why not: AI chats are not password managers. Your input may be stored or reviewed for safety.
Instead: Use a password manager or write it down in a secure place.
Social Security numbers
Why not: SSNs are high-value targets for identity theft. AI platforms are not built to protect them.
Instead: Replace with placeholder like [SSN redacted] if you need help with a form.
Credit or debit card numbers
Why not: Even partial numbers can be combined with other data to commit fraud.
Instead: Describe the issue in general terms without sharing the number.
Bank account or routing numbers
Why not: These can be used for unauthorized transfers.
Instead: Ask general questions like "What does this bank fee mean?" without account details.
Medical records and diagnoses
Why not: HIPAA does not apply to consumer AI tools. Your health data may be stored.
Instead: Describe symptoms generally or ask about a condition by name, not your specific records.
Unpublished work or trade secrets
Why not: Some AI services use inputs to improve models. Confidential info could leak.
Instead: Summarize the situation in your own words without revealing proprietary details.
Private photos or videos of others
Why not: Uploading images of people without consent raises legal and ethical issues.
Instead: Describe what is in the image or use your own photos only.
If you would not post it on a public bulletin board, do not paste it into an AI chat.
