How to clear AI chat history in any app (4 steps)

The menus differ a little, but every big AI app works the same way:

1. Open your chat list. It's the sidebar on a computer, or the menu (often two or three lines, or History) in a phone app.
2. Delete one chat: tap the three dots next to it (or press and hold it on a phone) and choose Delete, then confirm.
3. Delete all your AI history: open Settings and look under Data controls, Privacy or Activity for Delete all chats or Delete all activity. Some apps keep this on a website instead, like Google's myactivity.google.com or Microsoft's privacy dashboard.
4. Check the extras: "Archive" only hides a chat, so delete it if you want it gone. Saved memory and the training setting are separate switches, explained under History vs "improve the model" below.

AI Mode is the chat-style answer inside Google Search. Its chats are saved to your Google Account as part of your Search history, so you clear them in two places: AI Mode history, then Search history.

On a computer

1. Go to google.com (or open a new tab in Chrome) and select AI Mode.
2. Make sure you are signed in to the same Google Account you used before.
3. On the left, select AI Mode history to see your past AI Mode chats.
4. Delete one chat: next to it, select More (three dots) → Delete.

Google says a chat you delete from AI Mode history can still appear in your Search history, and deleted items may linger in My Activity for up to 24 hours before they clear by themselves. If you started from an AI Overview and tapped into AI Mode, there may be two entries. To remove everything now:

1. Go to myactivity.google.com and open Search history.
2. Select Delete, then choose Last hour, Last day, All time, or a Custom range.

History vs "improve the model"

Two different controls live in most AI tools:

• Visible history — The list of conversations you see in the sidebar. Deleting here removes them from your view.
• "Improve the model" — A setting that lets the company use your chats to train future models. Turning this off does not delete your visible history. Deleting your visible history does not automatically turn this off.

ChatGPT

As of late 2026, here is where to look:

• Delete one chat — Open the chat, click the conversation name or the three-dot menu, and choose Delete.
• Clear all history — Go to Settings → Data controls → Delete all chats.

Gemini history is tied to your Google Account. These steps are for the Gemini app and gemini.google.com:

• Delete one chat — Open the chat, click the three-dot menu, and choose Delete.
• Manage activity — In Gemini, open Settings & help → Activity (or go to myactivity.google.com and choose Gemini Apps Activity), then delete individual items or a date range.
• Turn off saving — On the same Activity page, look for Keep Activity (older versions say Gemini Apps Activity) and choose how long to keep activity or turn it off.

Copilot keeps your chats for 18 months if you are signed in, unless you delete them sooner (per Microsoft):

How to delete Character.AI chats

Yes, you can delete chats in Character.AI, but there is no single "delete all chats" button. Here is what works:

1. Delete one message: open the chat, press and hold the message (phone) or hover over it (computer), open its menu and choose Delete.
2. Clear a whole chat: scroll up to the very first message, choose Rewind to Here to remove everything after it, then delete that first message too. There is no undo.
3. Archive is not delete: archiving or hiding a chat only tidies your list. The conversation is still saved.
4. Delete everything at once: the only way is to delete your account. On the website go to Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Delete Account. In the app, open your Profile, tap the settings icon and choose Remove Account. This is permanent, so use Export data in the same place first if you want a copy.

How to delete all Duck.ai chats (DuckDuckGo)

Duck.ai is DuckDuckGo's free AI chat, at duck.ai or inside the DuckDuckGo browser. It keeps your recent chats on your own device by default, so you delete them from Duck.ai itself:

1. Delete all chats: open your list of recent chats and tap the Fire Button (the flame) at the top of the list, then choose Delete Chats.

Pictures you made with AI follow their own rules. In ChatGPT and Gemini a picture goes away when you delete the chat it was made in, and Grok keeps Imagine pictures separately. Steps are in the next section.

How to clear AI image history (Grok, ChatGPT, Gemini)

Pictures you make with AI aren't kept in a separate cache you can empty. Each app stores them a little differently:

• ChatGPT: pictures are saved on the Images page, but there's no delete button there. Delete the chat the picture was made in (the chat's ••• menu → Delete) and the picture goes too. Settings → Data controls → Delete all chats clears every picture at once.
• Gemini: pictures appear in My Stuff and are tied to the chat that made them. Delete that chat, or clear many at once at myactivity.google.com/product/gemini with Delete and a time range.

Why clearing is not a time machine

Deleting a chat removes it from your visible history. It does not guarantee it disappears from vendor logs, backups, or legal retention systems. If you already pasted something sensitive, treat it as exposed:

• If it was a password, change it.
• If it was a bank account number, contact your bank.
• If it was a credit card number, watch your statements and consider a replacement.
• Turn on two-factor authentication on the affected account.
