How to clear your AI chat history (and why it matters)
Delete ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot conversations. Understand what clearing does — and does not — do, plus how to avoid needing it in the first place.
Clearing your chat history is a healthy habit, but it is not a time machine. This guide shows you how to delete conversations in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot, what "improve the model" really means, and how to avoid needing a big delete in the first place.
History vs "improve the model"
Two different controls live in most AI tools:
- Visible history — The list of conversations you see in the sidebar. Deleting here removes them from your view.
- "Improve the model" — A setting that lets the company use your chats to train future models. Turning this off does not delete your visible history. Deleting your visible history does not automatically turn this off.
Do both if you want both outcomes.
ChatGPT
As of late 2026, here is where to look:
- Delete one chat — Open the chat, click the conversation name or the three-dot menu, and choose Delete.
- Clear all history — Go to Settings → Data controls → Delete all chats.
- Turn off training — Go to Settings → Data controls → Improve the model for everyone and toggle it off.
Because ChatGPT moves these labels over time, check the current OpenAI Help Center if the menu names look different.
Gemini
Gemini history is tied to your Google Account:
- Delete one chat — Open the chat, click the three-dot menu, and choose Delete.
- Manage activity — Go to myactivity.google.com, filter by Gemini Apps Activity, and delete individual items or a date range.
- Turn off saving — In Gemini settings, look for Gemini Apps Activity and choose how long to keep activity or pause it entirely.
Because Google changes these labels, check current Google Account help if the wording looks different.
Copilot
Copilot conversation controls are part of your Microsoft privacy settings:
- Delete one chat — Open the chat, click the three-dot menu, and choose Delete.
- Manage history — Go to your Microsoft account privacy dashboard and look for Copilot or Bing conversation history.
- Turn off training — In Copilot settings or Microsoft privacy settings, look for an option that lets you opt out of data being used to improve models.
Because Microsoft updates these paths, check current Microsoft privacy help if the labels look different.
UI labels and menu paths change. If a step above does not match what you see, check the vendor's current help page rather than guessing.
Why clearing is not a time machine
Deleting a chat removes it from your visible history. It does not guarantee it disappears from vendor logs, backups, or legal retention systems. If you already pasted something sensitive, treat it as exposed:
- If it was a password, change it.
- If it was a bank account number, contact your bank.
- If it was a credit card number, watch your statements and consider a replacement.
- Turn on two-factor authentication on the affected account.
We cannot wipe vendor logs for you. We can help you avoid the next mistake.
Household rule: one person, one login
Sharing one ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot login across a household means one person's "clear all" can wipe another person's work, homework, or saved ideas.
Prefer separate logins. If you are helping a family member set up their first account without taking over their password, see our 55+ independence guide.
Prevention: need this less often
The best delete is the one you do not need. Before you paste anything into AI:
- Review What never to paste
- Run drafts through the Privacy Paste-Check — it runs entirely in your browser and flags common risks
If you would not post it on a public bulletin board, do not paste it into an AI chat.
Frequently asked questions
Does deleting a ChatGPT chat mean OpenAI no longer has it?
Deleting removes it from your visible history. Vendor retention for abuse, legal, and safety review can differ — check current OpenAI help and privacy docs for the latest. Treat anything already pasted as something you would not put on a bulletin board.
How do I delete my Gemini chat history?
Use Google Account / Gemini Apps Activity controls. Steps from current Google help the day you write; if labels have shifted, check myactivity.google.com directly.
Is turning off "improve the model" the same as deleting history?
No. One controls whether chats may be used to improve models (wording varies by vendor); the other removes what you see in the sidebar. Do both if you want both outcomes — verify labels live.
Should a family share one ChatGPT (or Gemini/Copilot) login?
Prefer separate logins. Shared logins mean shared history and one person's "clear all" can wipe another's work. See our 55+ independence guide for helping without taking over the password.
I already pasted an account number — what now?
Contact the bank or issuer if a full number or credentials went out. Change related passwords. Turn on two-factor. Run future drafts through the Privacy Paste-Check and review What never to paste. Just With AI cannot wipe vendor logs.
