How to Delete Claude Chat History (One Chat or All at Once)

Delete one Claude chat or select them all and delete in one go, on the web, iPhone, or Android. Plus how to wipe Claude's memory and use incognito chats.

Quick answer: To delete one chat on claude.ai, hover over it in the left sidebar, click the ⋮ button and choose Delete, then confirm. To delete them all, click Chats and tasks, open the ⋮ menu on any chat, click Select, then Select all, and click Delete twice. On iPhone, touch and hold a chat and tap Delete. Anthropic says deleted chats leave your history right away and are removed from its systems within 30 days.

Claude is the AI helper made by a company called Anthropic. You can use it free at claude.ai or in the Claude apps for iPhone and Android (listed as "Claude by Anthropic"). It keeps your past chats in a list so you can come back to them. Here is how to tidy that list, step by step.

Delete one chat

On the web (claude.ai):

  1. Find the chat in the left sidebar, or click Chats and tasks to see all of them.
  2. Hover over the chat and click the ⋮ button on the right.
  3. Choose Delete, then click Delete again to confirm.

On iPhone:

  1. Open your chat list.
  2. Touch and hold the chat.
  3. Tap Delete, then Delete again.

Already inside the chat? Tap the ⋯ button in the top right corner and choose Delete.

On Android: open the chat, tap the ⋮ menu in the top right, tap Delete, then confirm.

Delete all your Claude chats at once

On the web:

  1. Click Chats and tasks in the left sidebar.
  2. Hover over any chat, click ⋮, and choose Select.
  3. Click Select all at the top (or tick just the chats you want gone).
  4. Click Delete, then Delete again to confirm.

On Android: in your chat list, tap the checklist icon in the top right, tick the chats you want to remove, then tap the trash icon and Delete.

Want a copy first? On the web or the Claude desktop app, go to Settings → Privacy → Export data. Claude emails you a download link, and that link stops working after about a day, so download it soon.

Claude's memory is separate from your chats

Claude can remember things about you from past chats to make answers more personal. Deleting a chat does not erase what Claude already learned from it. To clear that too:

  • See and remove memories: go to Settings → Memory and delete the topics you don't want kept.
  • Erase all memory: in Settings → Memory, switch off Generate memory from chats and choose Reset memory. Anthropic warns this can't be undone.
  • Just take a break: choose Pause memory instead. Claude keeps what it knows but stops using it or adding to it.

Chat without saving anything: incognito

When you start a new chat, look for the small ghost icon in the upper right corner. Click it to open an incognito chat. It isn't saved to your chat history, and Claude won't pull from it later. It's a good choice for one-off questions about health, money, or family.

Turn off training (this does not delete anything)

In Settings → Privacy, you can switch off the option that lets Anthropic use your chats to improve Claude. That protects future chats only. Your existing history stays exactly where it is, so delete chats separately if you want them gone.

Button names shift between app versions. If something here doesn't match your screen, look for the ⋮ or ⋯ menu next to a chat, or check Anthropic's own page, Delete or rename a conversation.

Want everything gone?

Deleting chats leaves your projects and account details in place. To remove all your Claude data, you would delete your account in Settings → Account. That is permanent, and if you pay for Claude Pro, cancel the subscription first.

Deleting is not a time machine

Deleting tidies your history. It doesn't undo something you already shared. If you typed a password, change it. If you shared a bank or card number, call your bank. Next time, check our What never to paste list first.

Other AI apps

If you would not post it on a public bulletin board, do not type it into an AI chat.
