How to delete Google Gemini and AI Mode chat history
Clear Gemini and Google AI Mode chats on phone and computer. What deleting does (and doesn't do), plus safer habits so you need it less.
If you have been using Gemini on a computer or phone, your conversations are saved to your Google Account by default. This guide shows you how to remove them, what that actually removes, and how to avoid needing a big delete in the first place.
What you are deleting (three different things)
Google keeps AI chat data in a few places. They overlap, but they are not the same:
- The chat list — What you see inside Gemini when you open the app or site. Deleting here removes the conversation from your view.
- Gemini Apps Activity — A log stored in your Google Account at myactivity.google.com. This can include chats from Gemini, AI Mode in Search, and other Google AI features. Deleting the chat list does not always delete this log.
- "Improve the product" settings — A control that lets Google use your chats to make models better. Turning this off does not delete old chats. Deleting old chats does not turn this off.
Do all three if you want all three outcomes.
On a computer
- Go to gemini.google.com and sign in.
- Find the chat you want to remove in the sidebar.
- Click the three-dot menu next to the chat name and choose Delete.
- To delete several at once, open myactivity.google.com, choose Gemini Apps Activity, and use the checkboxes to select items or a date range.
If you use AI Mode inside Google Search, those interactions are also saved under Gemini Apps Activity. You manage them the same way.
On iPhone or Android
- Open the Gemini app (or visit gemini.google.com in your browser and sign in).
- Tap and hold a chat in the list, or tap the three-dot menu, and choose Delete.
- For bulk cleanup, use myactivity.google.com in your phone browser the same way you would on a computer. Sign in, filter by Gemini Apps Activity, and delete by item or date range.
Because apps and menus change, if the wording looks different, check Google's current help rather than guessing.
The myactivity.google.com path
This is the most complete way to clean up:
- Go to myactivity.google.com.
- Sign in with the same Google Account you use for Gemini.
- Look for a filter or search option and choose Gemini Apps Activity.
- You will see a list of interactions. You can delete one by one, or pick a date range and delete in bulk.
- To stop future saving, look for an option to pause or turn off Gemini Apps Activity.
Google updates menu names and paths. If a step above does not match what you see, check myactivity.google.com directly or search Google's current help for "delete Gemini Apps Activity."
After you delete: it is not a time machine
Deleting removes chats from your visible history. It does not guarantee they disappear from Google backups, legal retention systems, or safety-review logs.
If you already pasted something sensitive into Gemini:
- If it was a password, change it now.
- If it was a bank account or card number, contact your bank and watch your statements.
- Turn on two-factor authentication on the affected account.

Need this less often
The best delete is the one you do not need. Before you paste into any AI tool:
- Review What never to paste
- Run drafts through the Privacy Paste-Check — it runs entirely in your browser and flags common risks
If you would not post it on a public bulletin board, do not paste it into an AI chat.
Also use ChatGPT or Copilot?
If you want to clear history across multiple AI tools, our general guide covers ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot in one place:
Household rule: one person, one login
Sharing one Google Account across a household means one person's "clear all" can wipe another person's work, homework, or saved ideas. Prefer separate Google Accounts. If you are helping a family member set up their first account without taking over their password, see our guide to signing up safely.
Frequently asked questions
Does deleting a Gemini chat remove it from Google completely?
Deleting removes it from your visible chat list. Vendor retention for abuse, legal, and safety review can differ from what you see on screen. Treat anything already pasted as something you would not put on a bulletin board.
What is Gemini Apps Activity?
It is the log Google keeps of your Gemini and AI Mode interactions, stored in your Google Account at myactivity.google.com. You can delete items there, delete in bulk by date range, or pause future saving.
How do I delete Google AI Mode chat history on my phone?
Open the Gemini app and delete individual chats, or visit myactivity.google.com in your phone browser, filter by Gemini Apps Activity, and delete by item or date range.
Will clearing history log me out of my Google Account?
No. Deleting chat history does not sign you out of your Google Account or other Google services.
I pasted a password into Gemini — what should I do now?
Change the password immediately. Turn on two-factor authentication if it is not already on. Run future drafts through the Privacy Paste-Check and review What never to paste.
