How to Delete Duck.ai Chat History (One Chat or All)
Delete all Duck.ai chats with the Fire Button inside Duck.ai, or remove one chat. Plus pinned chats, Sync & Backup, and turning chat history off.
Quick answer: To delete all chats in your Duck.ai chat history, open your list of recent chats and tap the Fire Button (the flame icon) at the top of the list, then choose Delete Chats. Duck.ai is the free AI chat from DuckDuckGo, the private search company. You can use it at duck.ai in any web browser, or inside the DuckDuckGo browser app on a phone or computer. It lets you chat with several well-known AI models without making an account.
Where your Duck.ai chats are kept
This is the part that surprises people. By default, Duck.ai saves your recent chats on your own device, not on a company server. DuckDuckGo says it can't read them. That changes how deleting works:
- In the DuckDuckGo browser (iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows), chats are stored on the device, separate from your normal browsing data.
- In another browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox), chats are stored in that browser. How long they stay depends on the browser. DuckDuckGo notes that Safari removes them by itself if you don't visit duck.ai for 7 days.
- If you turned on Sync & Backup, chats are also saved in encrypted form on a DuckDuckGo server so they show up on your other devices. DuckDuckGo says only your devices hold the key.
So if you use Duck.ai on a phone and a laptop without Sync & Backup, each one has its own list. Delete on each device.
Delete all your Duck.ai chats at once
- Open Duck.ai (at duck.ai, or the Duck.ai button in the DuckDuckGo browser).
- Open the list of recent chats (the sidebar on a computer, or the chats list on a phone).
- Tap the Fire Button at the top of the list.
- Choose Delete Chats and confirm.
Any chat you pinned stays put. That's on purpose, so you don't lose a chat you wanted to keep. If you want those gone too, unpin them first, or delete each one from its ⋮ menu.
Delete one chat, or a few
One chat: tap the Fire Button beside the chat, or open the ⋮ menu next to it and choose Delete Chat.
A few chats: tap the Fire Button at the top of the list and choose Selected Chats. Tick the chats you want gone, then tap the red Fire Button at the bottom of the screen to confirm.
Using the DuckDuckGo browser's Fire Button
The DuckDuckGo browser has its own Fire Button for clearing tabs, cookies, and browsing history. By default it leaves your Duck.ai chats alone. That's why the Fire Button inside Duck.ai is the one to use for chats.
If you use duck.ai in another browser, clearing that browser's site data or cookies for duck.ai also removes the chats saved there. With the DuckDuckGo extension in another browser, its Fire Button can also clear the Duck.ai chat you have open.
Stop saving chats in the first place
You can turn off chat history in Duck.ai settings. New chats then won't be kept in your recent list. It's a calm choice if you share a computer or mostly ask quick one-off questions.
If you use Sync & Backup
Sync & Backup is a free, optional feature that keeps your chats in step across devices. In the DuckDuckGo browser, find it under Settings, then Sync & Backup. In another browser, open Duck.ai settings and look for the Sync & Backup section. After you delete chats, open Duck.ai on one of your other synced devices and check that they're gone there too. DuckDuckGo says chats saved with Sync & Backup are deleted automatically if you don't open them for 18 months.
DuckDuckGo updates Duck.ai often, and icons move around. If a step doesn't match your screen, look for the flame-shaped Fire Button or a ⋮ menu next to a chat, or check the official Duck.ai help pages.
Is Duck.ai private?
It's one of the more private AI chats, but not a vault. DuckDuckGo says it removes your IP address before passing your question to the AI company, that those companies have agreed not to train on Duck.ai chats, and that most of them delete prompts right after answering (some may hold a chat in short-term memory for up to an hour). Uploaded pictures and files are checked by a safety service.
The same everyday rule still applies: don't type passwords, bank or card numbers, your Social Security or Medicare number, or anything you'd mind a stranger reading. Our What never to paste list has the full set.
Deleting is not a time machine
Deleting tidies your history. It doesn't undo something you already shared. If you typed a password, change it. If you shared a card number, call your bank.
