How to Delete AI Image History in ChatGPT, Gemini & Grok

Remove pictures you made with ChatGPT, Gemini, or Grok, one at a time or all at once. Plus why old images can sneak back into new ones, and how to start fresh.

Quick answer: In ChatGPT and Gemini, a picture you made stays as long as the chat it was made in. Delete that chat and the picture disappears from the Images page (ChatGPT) or My Stuff (Gemini). To clear lots of Gemini pictures at once, delete your activity at myactivity.google.com/product/gemini. In Grok, open Settings → Data Controls on grok.com and choose Delete All Imagine Posts.

AI helpers can now draw pictures for a birthday card, a garden plan, or a silly pet portrait. They also quietly keep a gallery of everything you've made. Here is how to tidy that gallery, app by app, without deleting more than you mean to.

In ChatGPT and Gemini, deleting a chat removes every picture made in that chat. Download any picture you want to keep before you delete.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT saves every picture it makes on its Images page, so you can find them again later. There is no separate delete button on that page. OpenAI says the way to remove a picture is to delete the conversation it was made in.

On a computer (chatgpt.com):

  1. Find the chat where you made the picture in the list on the left. Opening the picture from the Images page can help you spot which chat it came from.
  2. Hover over the chat's name and click the ••• button.
  3. Click Delete and confirm.

On iPhone or Android:

  1. Open the list of chats.
  2. Press and hold the chat's name.
  3. Tap Delete.

Want every picture gone? Go to Settings → Data controls → Delete all chats. That removes all your chats and the pictures made in them. Full steps are in How to delete ChatGPT chat history.

Photos you uploaded are separate. If you added your own photo or a document to a chat, ChatGPT may also keep a copy in your Library. Deleting the chat doesn't delete that copy. Open Library, pick the file, and click Delete or the trash button. OpenAI says deleted files are removed from its systems within 30 days, unless they must be kept for legal or security reasons.

Gemini

Gemini collects your pictures, videos, and other creations in My Stuff. Like ChatGPT, each picture is tied to the chat that made it.

Delete one picture:

  1. Open My Stuff and tap the picture. This takes you to the chat it came from.
  2. Open the chat's menu (tap the chat name at the top, or press and hold it in your list of recent chats).
  3. Choose Delete and confirm. The picture leaves My Stuff too. If it still shows, close and reopen the app.

Delete lots of pictures at once:

  1. Go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini (or in Gemini, open Settings & help → Activity).
  2. Click Delete above your activity.
  3. Choose Last hour, Last day, All time, or a Custom range for the dates you made the pictures.

Google says deleting a prompt in your Gemini activity also deletes any pictures made in answer to it. Choosing All time wipes all your Gemini chats along with the pictures, so only pick it if that's what you want. For more on Gemini and Google AI Mode history, see How to delete all Google AI Mode chats (and Gemini history).

Grok

Grok keeps the pictures and short videos you make with its Imagine feature apart from your chats.

  1. Sign in at grok.com.
  2. Click your profile picture, then Settings.
  3. Choose Data Controls.
  4. Find Delete All Imagine Posts and confirm.

Deleting your Grok chats doesn't delete your Imagine pictures, and deleting Imagine posts doesn't delete your chats. Do both if you want a clean slate. The company says deleted data is removed from its systems within 30 days. To clear the rest of your Grok history (chats, and Grok inside X), see how to clear Grok history.

Old pictures keep sneaking into new ones?

Sometimes an AI keeps "remembering" an earlier picture, like the same face, the same colors, or a mistake you asked it to fix. That usually isn't a hidden picture cache you can clear. It's the conversation, or the app's memory of past chats.

  • Start a new chat. Within one chat, the AI looks back at everything above, including earlier pictures. A fresh chat is the quickest reset.
  • Say what to drop. Be plain: "Ignore the earlier pictures. Start over with a white background and no people."
  • Use a private chat for one-offs. ChatGPT's Temporary Chat, Gemini's Temporary chat, and Grok's Private Chat (the ghost icon) aren't saved to your history and don't feed memory.

Stop old chats from shaping new pictures

If a new chat still brings back an old detail, the app may be drawing on memory of your past chats. Here is where to switch that off. None of these delete your chats or pictures, so you won't lose anything.

App Where to look What to turn off
ChatGPT Settings → Personalization → Memory Reference chat history (and delete any saved memory that keeps coming back)
Gemini Settings → Personal context (some accounts show Memory) Your past chats with Gemini
Grok Settings → Data Controls Personalize with memories (turning it off doesn't erase saved memories; delete those from the list)

OpenAI says that when you turn off Reference chat history, what ChatGPT picked up from past chats is deleted from its systems within 30 days. Your chats stay until you delete them. Menu names can differ a little by phone, computer, and plan.

A clean start, in order: download the keepers, delete the chat that made the wrong picture (or, in Grok, the Imagine posts), turn off memory of past chats if you need to, then make the new picture in a fresh chat. For the full chat-history steps in every app, see how to delete AI chat history.

What deleting does and doesn't do

  • The picture leaves your gallery right away on every device you're signed in on.
  • Copies you already downloaded, texted, or posted aren't touched. Delete those yourself.
  • A public share link may keep working until you remove it. Check your app's shared links settings.
  • Turning off training protects future chats only. It doesn't delete anything you already made.

Button names shift between app versions. If a step doesn't match your screen, check the official help page: OpenAI Help Center, Gemini Apps Help, or the Grok privacy FAQ.

A calm habit for next time

Before you upload a photo of a person, a document, or your home, ask yourself if you'd be fine with it sitting in an online gallery. If not, crop it, blur faces, or skip it. Our What not to share with AI list has more simple rules.

Frequently asked questions

How do I delete pictures I made with ChatGPT?

Delete the chat where you made the picture. On a computer, hover over the chat name, click the three dots, and choose Delete. On a phone, press and hold the chat name and tap Delete. The picture leaves the Images page too.

Can I delete one ChatGPT image without deleting the chat?

Not at the moment. OpenAI says the way to remove a picture from Images is to delete the conversation it was made in. Download any other pictures from that chat first if you want to keep them.

How do I delete images from My Stuff in Gemini?

Tap the picture in My Stuff to open its chat, then delete that chat. To remove many at once, go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini, click Delete, and choose a date range or All time.

How do I delete all my Grok Imagine pictures?

On grok.com, open Settings, then Data Controls, and choose Delete All Imagine Posts. This is separate from deleting your Grok chats.

Why does the AI keep repeating an old picture?

Usually because it's still looking at earlier messages in the same chat, or at saved memory. Start a new chat, check memory settings, and say clearly what to leave out.

How do I stop AI from reusing old images when I regenerate?

Make the new picture in a fresh chat, and say plainly what to leave out. If old details still come back, turn off memory of past chats: Reference chat history in ChatGPT, Your past chats with Gemini in Gemini, or Personalize with memories in Grok. This doesn't delete your chats.

Does deleting a chat delete photos I uploaded to ChatGPT?

Not always. Uploaded files can be saved in your ChatGPT Library separately from the chat. Open Library and delete the file there.
