How to Delete Microsoft Copilot Chat History (One Chat or All)
Delete one Copilot chat or your whole Copilot history on the web, Windows, Mac, or phone. Plus what Copilot remembers about you and how to clear it.
Quick answer: To delete one chat, open your conversation list, click the three dots (•••) next to the chat (or right-click it in the Windows or Mac app) and choose Delete. To delete everything, sign in to your Microsoft account privacy dashboard at account.microsoft.com/privacy/copilot and choose Delete all activity history, then Clear. If you use the Copilot phone app with an Apple ID, go to Account → Privacy → Clear my history instead.
Copilot is Microsoft's free AI helper. It lives at copilot.microsoft.com (also copilot.com), in its own app on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, and inside the Edge browser. If you are signed in, it keeps your past chats so you can pick up where you left off. Microsoft says it keeps them for 18 months unless you delete them sooner. Here is how to tidy up, step by step.
Copilot history at a glance
| What you want | Where to do it |
|---|---|
| Delete one chat (web or phone) | Chat list → ••• next to the chat → Delete |
| Delete one chat (Windows or Mac app) | Right-click the chat → Delete |
| Delete all chats (Microsoft account) | account.microsoft.com/privacy/copilot → Delete all activity history → Clear |
| Delete all chats (Apple ID) | Copilot app → Account → Privacy → Clear my history |
| Make Copilot forget things about you | Profile icon → Memory → Delete all Memory |
| Stop Copilot remembering new things | Profile icon → Memory → Personalization and memory (turn off) |
Not sure you need to delete everything? Most people only want to remove one or two chats, like a health question or a gift idea on a shared computer. Start small.
First, a quick check: which account are you using?
These steps are for Copilot with a personal Microsoft account (like an Outlook.com or Hotmail address) or an Apple ID. If you sign in with a work or school account, your organization controls your history, so ask your IT helpdesk.
Delete one chat
Open your conversation history first:
- On the web (copilot.microsoft.com): your chats are on the left side of the screen. If you don't see them, click the sidebar icon in the top-left corner.
- In the Windows or Mac app: same place, on the left. Open the sidebar if it's hidden.
- On a phone: open the menu and your chats appear in a list.
Then delete the chat:
- On the web or phone: tap or click the three dots (•••) to the right of the chat and choose Delete.
- In the Windows or Mac app: right-click the chat and choose Delete.
- Confirm if Copilot asks.
Delete all your Copilot chats at once
There is no single "delete all" button inside the chat list for a Microsoft account. You do it from your Microsoft privacy dashboard instead:
- Go to account.microsoft.com/privacy/copilot and sign in with the same Microsoft account you use for Copilot.
- Find Copilot app activity history.
- Choose Delete all activity history.
- Read the "Are you sure?" message and select Clear.
Want a copy first? On the same page, Export all activity history downloads your chats as a spreadsheet file (CSV) that you can open in Excel or Google Sheets.
Signed in with an Apple ID on iPhone? Open the Copilot app and go to Account → Privacy → Clear my history.
Copilot memory is separate from chat history
Copilot can remember details about you, like your favorite hobby or that you have a dog, to make answers more personal. Clearing those memories and deleting chats are two different things.
- See what it remembers: ask Copilot, "What do you know about me?"
- Forget one thing: ask it, for example, "Forget that I like science fiction movies."
- Forget everything: select your profile icon, then Memory → Delete all Memory. Microsoft notes this does not delete your conversation history, so do both if you want a clean slate.
- Turn memory off: select your profile icon, then your profile name, then Memory → Personalization and memory, and switch it off. In the phone app, open the menu first, then tap your profile icon. In the Edge sidebar, it's under ••• → Settings → Memory. Microsoft says that when you turn this off, Copilot forgets its memories of your conversations, but your past chats stay in your history until you delete them.
- Check it worked: ask "What do you know about me?" again.
Shared a Copilot chat with someone?
If you used the Share button to send a link to a chat, anyone with that link can see a copy of the conversation as it was when you made the link. Anything you add to the chat later doesn't show up for them. So before you share, check that the chat has no addresses, account numbers or health details in it. If you shared something by mistake, ask the person to delete the link and the message it came in.
Using Copilot on a shared family computer
If you share a computer or tablet with a partner or grandchild, your Copilot chats show up for anyone who opens Copilot while you're signed in. Two simple habits help:
- Sign out when you're done. Click your profile icon and choose Sign out. Your history stays in your account, but it won't show to the next person.
- Delete sensitive chats right away. After a chat about money, medicine or a surprise gift, delete it as soon as you've got your answer.
Turn off training (this does not delete anything)
Copilot's privacy settings also let you opt out of your conversations being used to train Microsoft's AI models. Switching that off protects future chats but leaves your history exactly as it is. Deleting is a separate step.
Microsoft released an updated Copilot app in August 2026, and button names can shift between versions. If something does not match your screen, look for the three-dot menu next to a chat, or check Microsoft's own page, Conversation history in Microsoft Copilot.
Deleting is not a time machine
Deleting tidies your history. It does not undo something you already shared. If you typed a password, change it. If you shared a bank or card number, call your bank. Next time, check our What never to paste list first.

Frequently asked questions
How do I delete all my Copilot chats at once?
With a Microsoft account, go to account.microsoft.com/privacy/copilot, find Copilot app activity history, choose Delete all activity history, then select Clear. With an Apple ID in the Copilot app, go to Account, Privacy, Clear my history.
How do I delete one Copilot conversation?
Open your conversation list, select the three dots next to the chat and choose Delete. In the Copilot app for Windows or Mac, right-click the chat and choose Delete.
How long does Copilot keep my chat history?
Microsoft says Copilot keeps the last 18 months of your conversations if you are signed in, unless you delete them sooner.
Does deleting chats delete what Copilot remembers about me?
No. Memory is separate. Ask Copilot to forget something, or delete all memory in its settings. Microsoft notes that deleting all memory does not delete your conversation history, so do both for a clean slate.
Can I save a copy of my Copilot chats before deleting?
Yes. In the Microsoft privacy dashboard, choose Export all activity history to download a spreadsheet file of your Copilot chats.
How do I turn off Copilot memory?
Select your profile icon, then your profile name, then Memory, Personalization and memory, and switch it off. Copilot then forgets its memories of your conversations. Your chat history is not deleted, so delete chats separately if you want them gone.
Can people see a Copilot chat I shared?
Yes. Anyone with the shared link can see a copy of the chat as it was when you made the link. Later messages are not included. Never share a chat that has private details in it.
I use Copilot at work. Can I delete my history?
Work and school accounts are managed by your organization, so these steps may not apply. Ask your IT helpdesk how history is kept and deleted.
