How to Delete Character.AI (C.AI) Chats: Plain Steps

Delete Character.AI (C.AI) chats with Delete or Rewind, export your data first, delete your account, and see what Archive does. Updated for the Chapter 11 sale.

Quick answer: Character.AI (often called C.AI) has no single "delete all chats" button. To clear a conversation, open it, use Rewind to Here on the very first message to remove everything after it, then delete that first message. To remove one message, open its menu and choose Delete. Archive only hides a chat; it does not erase it. To remove everything for good, delete your whole account in settings, but request a data export first if you want a copy, because the export takes 3 to 4 weeks.

On October 12, 2026, the company behind Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to sell the business. It says the app keeps running during the sale, which it expects to finish in late November or early December 2026, and that the platform will be shut down if no buyer is found. If you want chats gone, delete them now. If you want a copy, export your data first (steps below). As of November 3, 2026, the app and website are still up, and the company says subscriptions and its privacy practices are unchanged for now.

Character.AI is an app where you chat with made-up characters. It is popular with teens and with adults who like storytelling. If you, a grandchild, or a family member wants a conversation gone, here is what actually works.

Same steps on the C.AI app and website

Character.AI also goes by Character AI or C.AI. It is the same service, at character.ai and in the Character AI app for iPhone and Android. The steps below work on both, and your chats sync between them, so deleting in one place removes it everywhere you're signed in.

Delete one message

  1. Open the chat on the Character.AI website or app.
  2. Hover over the message (on a computer) or press and hold it (on a phone).
  3. Open the message's three-dot menu and choose Delete.
  4. Confirm. The message disappears from the chat.

Some versions let you pick a first and last message to delete everything in between in one go. If you see a "select" option in the delete screen, that is what it does.

Clear a whole chat with Rewind

Character.AI added a feature called Rewind to Here. It removes every message after the point you choose.

  1. Open the chat and scroll all the way up to the very first message (usually the character's greeting).
  2. Open that message's menu and choose Rewind to Here.
  3. Everything after it is removed.
  4. If you want the chat to be completely empty, delete that first message too.

Take your time with this one. Rewind is meant for starting over, so there is no undo for the messages it removes.

Archive is not the same as delete

You may see an Archive option (or the option to hide a character from your Recents). That tidies your list, but the conversation is still saved and can come back. If you want it gone, use Rewind or delete the messages first.

Also watch for Start New Chat From Here (sometimes called "new chat"). It makes a copy of the conversation to branch off from. It does not delete the original.

Export your chats first (it takes 3 to 4 weeks)

If you want a copy of your chats, ask for it before you delete anything. Character.AI's help center says an export can take 3 to 4 weeks. When it is ready, you get an email with a download link that works for 7 days, so download the file as soon as the email arrives.

  • On the website: Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export Data.
  • In the app: open your Profile, tap the settings icon, then choose Export Data under Legal & Privacy.

Because of that wait, request the export today if you might want it. You can still delete single messages or whole chats while you wait, but deleting your account before the file arrives means you lose access to your chats too.

Delete your Character.AI account (and every chat)

If the goal is to remove all chats at once, deleting the account is the only one-step option. It is permanent and cannot be undone.

  • On the website: Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Delete Account.
  • In the app: open your Profile, tap the settings icon, then look for Remove Account or Delete Account.

If you pay through the App Store or Google Play, cancel the subscription there as well. Character.AI's help page does not say whether deleting the account ends a store subscription.

Character.AI updates its app often, and button names move around. If a step does not match your screen, look for a three-dot menu on the message or a settings gear on your profile, or check the official Character.AI Help Center.

For parents and grandparents

If a young person in your life uses Character.AI, deleting chats together can be a calm, low-drama conversation:

  • Sit with them and let them do the tapping. It is their account and their history.
  • Talk about what never to share with any chatbot: full name with school, address, phone number, photos, passwords. Our What never to paste list works for kids too.
  • Remember that deleting removes chats from the screen. Like every AI company, Character.AI may keep some data on its side for safety or legal reasons, so prevention matters more than cleanup.

After you delete: it is not a time machine

Deleting removes chats from what you see. It does not guarantee they vanish from the company's backups or safety logs. If someone shared something sensitive, like a password or home address, change the password and think about who else might have it.

Other AI apps

If you would not post it on a public bulletin board, do not type it into an AI chat.

Frequently asked questions

Can you delete chats in Character.AI?

Yes, but not with one button. You can delete single messages from their menu, or use Rewind to Here on the first message to clear a whole chat, then delete that first message. Archiving only hides a chat.

Does archiving a Character.AI chat delete it?

No. Archiving or hiding a character tidies your list, but the conversation is still saved. Use Rewind or delete the messages if you want it gone.

How do I delete all my Character.AI chats at once?

The only one-step way is to delete your account: Profile Settings, then Account, then Manage Account & Data, then Delete Account. This is permanent. Export your data first if you want a copy.

How do I delete my Character.AI account?

On the website, open your Profile, then Profile Settings, then Account, then Manage Account & Data, then Delete Account. In the app, open your profile, tap the settings icon, and choose Remove Account. It is permanent, and it removes your chats too, so export your data first if you want a copy.

How long does a Character.AI data export take?

Character.AI's help center says an export can take 3 to 4 weeks. When it is ready, you get an email with a download link that works for 7 days. Request the export first, wait for the email and download your file, and only then delete your account.

Does deleting a Character.AI chat erase it from the company's servers?

Deleting removes it from your view. Like other AI companies, Character.AI may keep some data for safety or legal reasons. Treat anything already shared as something you would not post on a public bulletin board.

What happens to my Character.AI chats now that the company filed for bankruptcy?

Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026 to sell the business. It says the app keeps running during the sale, expected to finish in late November or early December 2026, and will be shut down if no buyer is found. If you want chats gone, delete them now; if you want a copy, export your data first.

How do I delete C.AI chats on my phone?

C.AI is short for Character.AI. In the app, press and hold a message and choose Delete from its menu. To clear a whole chat, open the first message's menu and choose Rewind to Here, then delete that first message. To remove every chat at once, delete your account from your profile's settings.

Is Character.AI safe for my grandchild?

That is a family decision. Check the app's current age rules, use it together at first, and agree on what never to share. Deleting chats is a good habit, but not sharing private details in the first place is better.
