How to Delete Alexa History (Voice Recordings and Alexa+ Chats)
Delete Alexa voice recordings and chats in the Alexa app, on the web, or by voice, set 3-month or 18-month auto-delete, and see what Amazon still keeps.
Quick answer: Open the Alexa app, tap More, tap Alexa Privacy, then tap Review Alexa History (some versions say Review Voice History). Pick a date range, a device, or a person, select what you want gone, and delete it. To wipe everything, tap Delete all History. To have Amazon clean up for you, go to More → Alexa Privacy → Manage Your Alexa Data and choose to keep recordings for 3 months or 18 months.
Alexa keeps a list of what you asked it, and with Alexa+ that list now looks a lot like a chat history. Most people never look at it. It takes about two minutes, and you don't need to be good with technology. These steps match Amazon's help pages as of November 2026. Amazon renames menu items now and then, so if a word looks a little different, look for the nearest one.
Delete Alexa history in the Alexa app
- Open the Alexa app on your phone or tablet.
- Tap More.
- Tap Alexa Privacy.
- Tap Review Alexa History (or Review Voice History).
- Pick a date range, or filter by device or person if several people use the same Echo.
- Select the entries you want to remove and delete them, or tap Delete all History to clear everything.
Amazon says your recordings stay visible until the delete request has finished processing, so give it a few minutes before you check again. On an Echo Show, you can also tap More, then Alexa Privacy, right on the screen.
Delete Alexa history on a computer
If you'd rather use a keyboard, sign in to your Amazon account and go to amazon.com/alexaprivacysettings. It shows the same Alexa Privacy choices as the app. Check the web address carefully, and don't click a link in a text or email that claims to be "Alexa support." Type the address yourself.
Delete Alexa history by voice (regular Alexa only)
You can ask Alexa to delete what you said, once you turn this on:
- In the Alexa app, tap More → Alexa Privacy → Manage Your Alexa Data.
- Tap Voice and Typed Requests, then choose how often you want your recordings deleted. This is the setting that lets Alexa delete by voice.
- Then say one of these to your Echo:
- "Alexa, delete what I just said."
- "Alexa, delete everything I said today."
- "Alexa, delete my entire voice history."
Two limits: Amazon says deleting by voice doesn't work with Alexa+, so use the app or the web page for that. And it isn't supported on Amazon Kids devices, so a parent should use the app.
Let Alexa delete old history for you
Rather than remembering to clean up, you can set a timer:
- Open the Alexa app, then More → Alexa Privacy → Manage Your Alexa Data.
- Under Voice Recordings, tap Choose how long to save recordings.
- Pick 3 months or 18 months, then tap Confirm.
You can also choose Don't save recordings. That deletes your saved recordings and stops new ones from being kept. Amazon notes it can take up to a day and a half to take effect, and your text transcripts and typed requests can stay for about 30 days after your last chat before they are deleted. The trade-off is that Voice ID (Alexa telling people apart by voice) stops working, and some personal features may work less well.
What deleting does not remove
Deleting your history removes voice recordings, text transcripts, and typed requests. It does not wipe everything Alexa does for you:
- Your reminders, timers, alarms, and shopping lists stay. That is a good thing.
- Messages you sent through Alexa stay. Amazon says deleting voice recordings doesn't delete them.
- Memory-style notes, such as things you asked Alexa to remember, stay until you remove them.
- Amazon may keep records of what Alexa did, like an order it placed, so it can keep your account working.
- If you pressed the thumbs-down or said "Alexa, report an issue," Amazon keeps a copy of that request to look into it.
- A third-party skill you used may have its own data, which you delete in that skill's own settings.
Alexa+ chats
Alexa+ is Amazon's newer, chatty version of Alexa. Your conversations show up in the same Alexa Privacy area, grouped into chats when the questions go together, for example several questions in a row about places to visit in Paris. Delete a whole chat the same way you delete anything else in Review Alexa History.
Stop Alexa from listening for a while
Echo speakers have a microphone off button on top. Press it and the light turns red. Alexa can't hear you until you press it again. That's the simplest choice when you're talking about something private.
Since March 28, 2025, Amazon no longer offers the "Do Not Send Voice Recordings" option on Echo devices, so what you say after the wake word is processed in Amazon's cloud. That's one more reason to use the delete and auto-delete settings above. Our voice assistant guide has more calm, practical tips for Echo, Siri and Gemini.
Helping a parent
If you're setting this up for a parent, sit beside them and do it together: open the Alexa app, show them Alexa Privacy, and choose 3 months or 18 months. Then save the steps on a sticky note. If you help someone often, our guide to helping without taking over has gentle ways to do it.
Deleting is not a time machine
Deleting tidies your history. It doesn't undo something you already said out loud. If you read out a password or a card number, change the password or call your bank. And if someone phones saying they're from "Alexa" or "Amazon support" and asks for a code or a payment, hang up and use the number on your Amazon account page. See How to spot fake support. Next time, check What never to paste into AI, since the same list is smart to follow when you speak to a device.

Frequently asked questions
How do I delete my Alexa history?
Open the Alexa app, tap More, tap Alexa Privacy, and tap Review Alexa History. Pick a date range, device or person, then delete the entries, or tap Delete all History.
Can I tell Alexa to delete what I said?
Yes, on regular Alexa. First turn on deletion by voice in the Alexa app (More, Alexa Privacy, Manage Your Alexa Data). Then say "Delete what I just said" or "Delete everything I said today." This does not work with Alexa+.
Can Alexa delete my recordings automatically?
Yes. In the Alexa app go to More, Alexa Privacy, Manage Your Alexa Data and choose to keep recordings for 3 months or 18 months. You can also choose Don't save recordings, but Voice ID will stop working.
Does deleting Alexa history delete my reminders and shopping list?
No. Deleting your history removes voice recordings, transcripts and typed requests. Your reminders, timers, shopping lists and messages stay, and Amazon may keep some records of what Alexa did for you.
Is Alexa always listening?
Echo speakers listen for the wake word and then send your request to Amazon. Press the microphone off button on top of the speaker, and the light turns red, when you want it not to listen.
Why can't I delete Alexa+ history by voice?
Amazon does not support voice deletion with Alexa+. Use the Alexa app (More, Alexa Privacy) or the Alexa Privacy Settings page on Amazon's website instead.
