AI for adults 55+: independence, family sharing, larger-type setup
How to use AI safely and comfortably if you are 55+: larger type, voice input, family sharing, and scam awareness.
AI is not just for young people. With a few setup tweaks, it becomes a practical helper for everyday tasks — reading letters, writing emails, and staying connected.
1. Make text larger
- iPhone/iPad: Settings → Display & Brightness → Text Size
- Android: Settings → Display → Font size
- Computer: Press Ctrl/Cmd and + to zoom in on any website
- AI apps: Most have a settings menu with font size or accessibility options
2. Use your voice
You do not have to type long prompts. In ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot, tap the microphone icon and speak naturally.
"Write a short birthday message for my granddaughter. Make it warm and mention I am proud of her."
3. Share with family safely
- Ask a family member to sit with you for your first 3 prompts. It builds confidence.
- Do not share login passwords with anyone — including family — over text or email.
- If a family member helps you set up an account, make sure you know the password too.
- Review what not to paste into AI in our Never Paste guide.
4. Start with one task
You do not need to learn everything. Pick one task this week:
- Summarize a letter you received
- Rewrite an email so it sounds polite
- Plan a simple weekly meal list
- Ask AI to explain a news story in plain English
Scammers target older adults with fake tech support calls. No legitimate AI company will call you and ask for money or remote access to your computer. If unsure, hang up and call the company directly using the number on their official website.
