How to Write Your Life Story With AI (Free Prompts for Seniors)

Write your life story or memoir with free AI help: talk instead of type, let ChatGPT ask you one question at a time, and turn your memories into short chapters your family will read.

Quick answer: To write your life story with AI, open a free app like ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot and ask it to interview you, one question at a time. Answer out loud with the microphone button, as if you were talking to a grandchild. When you've told a story, ask the AI to tidy it into a short chapter in your own words, then read it, fix anything it got wrong, and save it. Fifteen minutes a week is enough. In a year you'll have a memoir your family can keep.

You don't need to be a writer. You already know the stories. The hard parts are getting started, remembering details, and turning talk into tidy pages. AI is good at all three, as long as the stories, and the voice, stay yours.

What you need

  • A free AI app. ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot all work, on a phone, tablet or computer. Not sure which? See the best AI app for seniors.
  • A place to keep the finished chapters. A notes app, a Word or Google document, or a folder of printouts. Don't rely on the chat alone.
  • Fifteen quiet minutes. A cup of coffee helps.

If you can, use the same chat (or a ChatGPT Project, which free accounts can make) for the whole book, so the AI remembers names and places from earlier chapters. In ChatGPT, tap New project, call it "My life story," and start each session inside it.

Before you start: three small choices

  • Who is it for? Grandchildren, your children, or just you. Picture one person reading it, and tell the AI. It changes the tone.
  • Talk or type? Talking is faster and sounds more like you. Most people find the microphone button easier than the keyboard.
  • How far will you go? Start with one story, not the whole book. If you enjoy it, keep going. A single chapter is still a gift.

Step 1: Let AI interview you

The easiest way to start is to be asked. Copy this into the app:

I'd like to write my life story for my family. Please interview me like a kind, patient grandchild. Ask me one question at a time, starting with my earliest memories, and wait for my answer before asking the next. Ask follow-up questions about people, places, smells and sounds. Keep your questions short.

Talk instead of typing. Tap the microphone in the message box and speak. To have a back-and-forth spoken conversation, use the voice button (it looks like a sound wave) in ChatGPT, or tap Live in the Gemini phone app. Talking is faster, and it sounds more like you.

Don't worry about order, dates or rambling. Say "I don't remember exactly" when you don't. The AI will move on.

Step 2: Pick your chapters

A life story doesn't have to go from birth to today. Some people like a short chapter per topic. Ask:

Help me plan my life story as 12 short chapters. Here's a quick outline of my life: [where you grew up, school, work, marriage or partners, children, moves, big events]. Suggest a chapter list with a warm title for each, and 3 questions per chapter to get me talking.

Common chapters people use:

Chapter Questions to get you started
Where I come from Where did you grow up? What did your house look like? Who lived there?
My parents and grandparents What were they like? What did they teach you? A saying they always used?
School days Favorite teacher? Trouble you got into? Best friend?
First jobs First paycheck? What did you buy? Worst boss?
Love and family How did you meet? Your wedding day? When your children were born?
Home and work life Where you lived, what you did, what you were proud of
Hard times A time things went wrong, and how you got through it
Good times Trips, celebrations, the best day you can remember
The world around me Big news you lived through, prices then, music, cars, phones
What I've learned Advice for your grandchildren; what you'd tell your younger self

Step 3: Turn your talk into a chapter

When you've answered a few questions about one topic, ask the AI to write it up. The key words are "in my own words." Without them, AI tends to make everything sound fancy and the same.

Turn what I just told you into a short chapter, about 400 words, called "[chapter title]." Use my own words and phrases as much as you can, written as me ("I"). Keep it plain and warm. Don't add any facts, names, dates or feelings I didn't mention. At the end, list anything you weren't sure about so I can check it.

Then read it out loud. If a sentence doesn't sound like you, say so: "I'd never say 'cherished.' I'd say 'I loved that old truck.'" Ask it to fix that line. Putting a word in quotes, like 'cherished', tells the AI you mean that exact word. More on typing 'this' or *this* when chatting to AI.

AI sometimes fills gaps with things that sound right but never happened: a wrong year, an aunt's name, a reason you didn't give. Check every name, date and place. Your family will trust this book, so it needs to be true.

Step 4: Save each chapter outside the chat

When a chapter is right, copy it into your own document and give it a date. Chats can get deleted, accounts can change, and apps come and go. A Word or Google document that you (or a family member) back up is safer.

If you'd rather talk than type even here, Google Docs on a computer has Tools > Voice typing. Click the microphone and speak straight into the page.

Step 5: Add photos and old letters

Photos jog memories. You can show one to the AI and ask it to help you remember:

Here's a photo from around [year]. Ask me 5 questions about it: who's in it, where it was taken, what happened that day, and what happened after.

Only upload photos you're comfortable sharing, and crop out anything private like addresses or documents. For old handwritten letters, AI can often read the handwriting and type it up for you. Double-check names and numbers. To repair a faded or scratched photo, or to build out the family tree behind your story, see how to use AI for family history and old photos.

Step 6: Put it together

When you have a stack of chapters, ask the AI for help with the finishing touches:

  • A table of contents and a short opening: "Write a one-paragraph introduction to my life story, in my voice, saying why I wrote it for my family."
  • A quick check: "Read this chapter and point out spelling mistakes or places that are confusing. Don't rewrite it."
  • A family tree page listing the people you mention, so grandchildren can keep track.

Then print it at home or at a copy shop, or make a photo book with any online printer. Paid memoir services such as Storyworth send a weekly question by email and print a hardcover book at the end. Plans started at about $59 a year in October 2026. You can do the same thing for free with a chatbot and a printer.

Keeping it private and kind

  • Leave out ID numbers, account details and full birth dates. The AI doesn't need them to help you write. Here's what never to share with AI.
  • Be thoughtful about living people. It's your story, but family secrets, health details and old arguments can hurt. Ask: "Help me write about this gently, without blaming anyone."
  • Delete the chats when you're done, if you'd rather they weren't saved. Your chapters are safe in your own document. See how to clear AI chat history.

Writing a parent's story instead?

The same steps work if you're helping a mother, father or grandparent. Sit with them, let the AI ask the questions, and you hold the phone. Read the chapter back to them and let them correct it. For setting up the app together, see how to help a parent use AI safely.

If you're the grandparent, your finished chapters make a lovely gift for the grandkids. For more ways to share time with them, from bedtime storybooks to car-ride games, see our AI tips for grandparents.

FAQ

Can AI write my life story for me? AI can't know your memories, but it can do the hard parts: ask good questions, turn your spoken answers into neat chapters, fix spelling and help you organize. You tell the stories; AI helps you write them down.

What's the best free AI to write a memoir? ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot all have free versions that work well for interviewing you and tidying chapters. Pick the one you find easiest to talk to. ChatGPT's free Projects feature helps keep a whole book in one place.

How do I make it sound like me and not like a robot? Talk instead of typing, ask the AI to "use my own words and phrases," and read each chapter out loud. Change any word you'd never say. Short sentences and your own sayings make it sound like you.

Is it safe to tell ChatGPT my life story? Memories, places and first names are generally fine. Leave out Social Security, Medicare and bank numbers, full birth dates and passwords. Save your chapters in your own document, and delete chats you don't want kept.

How long should a life story be? Any length is worth having. Twelve chapters of 400 to 800 words makes a small book of about 30 to 60 pages. Even five short stories are a gift to your family.

What questions should I answer in my life story? Start with where you grew up, your parents and grandparents, school, first jobs, how you met your partner, raising a family, hard times, good times and the lessons you'd pass on. Ask the AI for more questions on any of these.
